Guide
Sometimes you know exactly who you want to write to, and still can't find where to begin. That's what this page is for — not full letters, just starting points. Pick one prompt, answer it honestly, and see where it takes you. Most letters end up somewhere very different from where the first line pointed, and that's usually a good sign.
Write about a small thing they did recently that you never actually thanked them for.
Describe the version of them you fell for, and tell them if it's changed.
Write about a moment where they surprised you, even a small one.
Tell them what you'd miss most about a normal Tuesday with them.
Write down an inside joke and explain, seriously, why it still makes you laugh.
Describe exactly what you'd do together if they walked in right now.
Write about the last time you felt closest to them, despite the distance.
Tell them one thing about your life right now they wouldn't know unless you said it.
Write about a song, smell, or place that reminds you of them out of nowhere.
Describe what you imagine their day looks like right now, on the other side of the clock.
Write about something you wish you'd said at the time, but didn't.
Tell them what you understand now about that period that you didn't back then.
Describe a memory of them exactly as you remember it, without editing it to be kinder or harsher.
Write about whether you'd do anything differently, knowing what you know now.
Tell them, honestly, whether you think about them often or rarely — and why.
Describe the exact moment you realized how much they'd helped you.
Write about who you'd be if they hadn't shown up when they did.
Tell them about a piece of advice from them that you still use.
Describe something they do so consistently that you've stopped noticing it — until now.
Write about a time they believed in you before you believed in yourself.
Write a letter to the version of you from five years ago.
Write a letter to the version of you five years from now.
Describe a fear you've been carrying, without trying to solve it in the same letter.
Write about something you're proud of that you've never said out loud to anyone.
Tell yourself what you needed to hear on your hardest day this year.
Start with 'I don't know how to say this, but' and keep writing from there.
Describe the room you're sitting in right now, then write why you're thinking of them in it.
Write the one sentence you'd want them to remember, then build the rest of the letter around it.
Finish this line and keep going: 'The thing I keep almost telling you is...'
Write down three random memories with them, then pick the one that surprises you most and expand on it.
If a prompt sparks something but you're not sure how to shape it into a full letter, Penlu's guide to writing a letter covers openings, tone, and how to close without it feeling abrupt. And if you already know the occasion you're writing for, the letter ideas page has examples for celebrations, love, apologies, and more.
